A little more about Travis.

Travis Thompson has spent his life fighting for working families, immigrants, renters, homeowners, and communities in need because he grew up facing many of the same challenges.

Families in District 43A are under pressure. Rent keeps rising. A 15% property levy hit Crystal homeowners. Childcare costs are straining parents. Groceries and essentials are more expensive than ever.

A fourteen year resident of Crystal, Travis knows our community deserves a representative who understands these challenges–because he has lived them–one who fights for sound policy over sound bites, and bring his experience, clarity, and passion to the Minnesota House!

Why Travis is running.

Fourteen years ago, Travis moved to Crystal and chose to raise his two young sons here because our community is exceptional. In those fourteen years, Travis has served within the DFL to represent our district at the local, regional, state, and national levels.

In 2012, Travis was fortunate to become a homeowner in Crystal, and believes that the dream of a stable home should be attainable for everyone. Whether a renter or owner, no one should be forced to choose between the security of a stable home and food on the table for their family.

Crystal is home.

Born to teenage parents in Blue Earth, Travis lived throughout Minnesota — living in trailer parks and moving fifteen times before turning fifteen years old.  To make ends meet, his family relied on Minnesota’s social safety net and local food support. Often Christmas was made possible owing to generosity of charitable organization like Toys for Tots and the Salvation Army, while Travis bought gifts for his siblings with money earned from delivering newspapers.

His ancestral roots reflect the diversity of Minnesota itself: German, Norwegian, and Swedish from his father; Mexican and Coahuiltecan from his mother.  His paternal grandparents were best friends with Vice President Walter Mondale, while his maternal grandparents were small business owners.

A Minnesota boy.

Following undergraduate studies and feeling a calling to give back to his community, Travis joined AmeriCorps for two years and directed a team of volunteers working throughout Minnesota with children diagnosed with lead poisoning.

Travis’ interest in politics began in 1983 when his grandfather introduced him to Walter Mondale in Elmore, MN. Travis’ first doorknocking experience was at the age of 10 campaigning for a family friend and the mayor of Blue Earth. At the age of 26, he became a Legislative Assistant to State Representative Karen Clark.

From these experiences, his sense of justice and equality made him interested in law school, earning his J.D. with honors in public service from William Mitchell School of Law (now Mitchell Hamline School of Law) in 2006.  Immediately thereafter, Travis took a position with Centro Legal providing pro bono work for immigrants impacted by the Bush-era ICE raids occurring in Minnesota.

A lifelong commitment to service.

As a small business owner and family law attorney who provides support to victims of domestic violence and illegal evictions, Travis has been recognized as a Northstar Attorney by the Minnesota State Bar Association for extensive pro bono service to those in need.

In addition to volunteering locally at food shelves and soup kitchens, since 2016 Travis has volunteered and organized international humanitarian missions throughout Latin America, helping to build homes, providing legal advice, and most recently focusing on food relief to the people of Cuba.

Travis is a DFL activist and reformer, including serving as a DNC delegate in 2016 for Bernie Sanders and an elector for Joe Biden in the 2020 Electoral College. Now that his sons are older, he’s ready to take his service and commitment to the next level.

Professional. Caring.

I support Travis!
